Instrument of Success
After Terry Peterson, DC, had carpal tunnel surgery 3 years ago, the Mesa, Ariz-based chiropractor looked at severely reducing his practice volume. He was no longer able to easily use manual or mechanical techniques. That was until his friend Christopher J. He meets quarterly with the other medical professions in a round table discussion group. In addition, he addresses specific chiropractic concerns with the other 49 states in monthly teleconference meetings, followed by annual sessions in Washington, D.C., monitoring legislative actions concerning Chiropractic issues.
There is a lot of confusion regarding obtaining a medical referral for Chiropractic care. The bad news is that if you are required to have one, you will need it on the very first visit. Some medical practitioners are willing to offer referrals by fax if you are established with their office and they have a record of your health issue on file. Others insist that you visit their office and obtain the referral in person during an official appointment. Oftentimes patients assume it is a doctor preference or possibly even a discrimination tactic against Chiropractic. This may be true, but more probably it is an insurance issue. We have had a problem with one plan administered by a local hospital chain in that they refuse to allow their Medical doctors to refer for Chiropractic care, even though the patient’s policy includes chiropractic coverage and the chiropractors are contracted with the plans. As one medical doctor’s staff stated, “It isn’t that we won’t refer, we can’t refer. The hospital has instructed us not to.” Our office offers access to the American Chiropractic Association’s organized lobbying efforts to end this blatant discrimination.
